DreamWorks Animation released "Rise of the Guardians" last week, and the mediocre earnings of $36.2 million have made the shares for the company drop down 3.1% to $17.49. Janney Capital Markets' Tony Wible had spoken of the release, calling it, "one of the most disappointing releases in the company's history."
The film was expected to earn at least $55 million over Thanksgiving, and now it is expected to generate around $134 million domestically, down from the forecasted amount of $225 million, and $312 million internationally, down from $338 million.
Wible said that "Parent review sites noted several dark moments, which may have kept younger viewers away" but that they are still struggling "to understand why audiences rejected the film."
Sales will have to reach at least $235 million internationally in order to keep the film out of the red.
