Day two of Cinemacon 2018 Studio presentations brought a wide variety of options as Disney, Warner Bros., and STX Films all gave sneak peeks of the rest of their 2018 movies.
The morning started with Walt Disney Studios bidding a fond farewell to Dave Hollis and passing the reigns onto Cathleen Taff as the new head of distribution. Their Marvel lineup began with Antman and The Wasp and moved to a rendering of Academy Award Winner Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. Of course, Lucasfilm showed a scene from the highly anticipated Solo: a Star Wars Story. They then gave us scenes from their live-action options including Dumbo, Aladdin, Christopher Robins, and the first scene from The Lion King. The animated features included Incredibles II and an absolutely hilarious scene from Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 where Princess Vanellope meets the other Disney Princesses.
Next up Warner Bros. "master of Ceremonies" Will Arnet introduced movie after movie and spoke to many of the stars cast in those films. Their superhero slate started with Aquaman, moved to Shazam, and ended with a discussion about Wonder Woman 2. Then Life of the Party's Melissa McCarthy joined Arnett on Stage to discuss the funny feature. Warner Bros. also gave us sneak peeks of Oceans 8, Tag, The Meg Teen Titans Go to the Movies, Small Foot, and A Star is Born. Finally, they discussed It 2, Crazy Rich Asian, and Mowgli.
The final presentation of the day came from STX Films. Known for mid-budget star cast movies they began with the Shailene Woodley/Sam Claflin drama Adrift. Next, they moved on to Peppermint, an action/drama starring Jennifer Garner who entertained the audience with a snippet of her Capital One commercial. They also had a taped message from Jennifer Lopez who introduced her film, Second Act. Moving to animation they revealed another franchise partner- Hasbro (previously announced) and Walmart - for the movie Ugly Dolls. Next was the cast of Mile 22 starring Mark Wahlberg touted as more than just an action movie and was revealed to be a franchise rather than just one film. Ending their evening STX Films decided to treat audiences with a peek at The Happy Time Murders, which while animated, was definitely not for kids.
It was a packed day of exciting, new movies and special announcements that left the audience anticipating what the rest of 2018 has in store. It will be interesting to see what the studios will show us tomorrow - day three of Cinemacon 2018.
