HBO has announced they have given a series order for a new show based on the popular Playstation video game, The Last of Us. Along with game creator Neil Druckmann, Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, and Game of Thrones exec producer Carolyn Strauss, the series will be a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Word Games, and Naughty Dog.
The Last of Us is an action-adventure game that was released in 2013. The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Francesca Orsi, EVP HBO Programming, describes Druckmann and Mazin, who are co-writing the series, "visionaries in a league of their own". She also believes this show will not only attract die-hard fans of the video game but newcomers as well who have yet to be introduced to this franchise. President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, Jeff Frost, and Head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, stated, "We're thrilled to be working with HBO and this fantastic creative team to bring The Last of Us series to life".
No details as to when production may begin have been announced at this time.
