It's been announced that Daisy Ridley's Star Wars franchise character Rey will be the focus of an upcoming feature film. The film will be the first since 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker". The announcement was made by today by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at the Star Wars Celebration in London.
The film, which will follow the story of Rey building up a new Jedi Order, will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and was penned by Steven Knight.
Rey was introduced in the 2015 film "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" as the main protagonist of the sequel trilogy. She is a scavenger from the desert planet of Jakku who becomes involved in the galactic conflict between the Resistance and the First Order. She is strong with the Force, a mystical energy field that binds the galaxy together, and she is able to use it to perform incredible feats such as telekinesis and mind control. Rey's lineage was revealed to be linked to the Palpatine bloodline.
Throughout the sequel trilogy, Rey forms close bonds with other characters, particularly Finn and Poe Dameron. She also develops a complex relationship with the villainous Kylo Ren, who is revealed to be her cousin, Ben Solo.

Obaid-Chinoy makes history with this directing job, being the first woman and the first person of color to direct a "Star Wars" film. She is an Academy Award winner, as well. She won for her documentary shorts in 2011 for "Saving Face" and in 2015 for "A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness." She's also no stranger to Disney, as she directed two episodes for the Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel". Her addition to the Star Wars universe signals a commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
