Disney Launches Office of Technology Enablement to Drive Innovation in AI and Mixed Reality

Disney has announced that they have launched a new strategic group, known as the Office of Technology Enablement (OTE), dedicated to overseeing and coordinating the development and implementation of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and mixed reality (XR). This group is intended to ensure Disney adopts these technologies responsibly. Jamie Voris, who has served as the chief technology officer of Walt Disney Studios for 14 years, has been appointed to lead the OTE. He will report directly to Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman, who shared the news of the group's formation in an internal memo.

"Our ability to remain at the forefront of technological advances will only be more critical as we move forward - making it all the more important to understand and embrace new technological shifts in ways that enable our people, creativity and business," Bergman said in the memo. He added, "The pace and scope of advances in AI and XR [extended reality] are profound and will continue to impact consumer experiences, creative endeavors, and our business for years to come - making it critical that Disney explore the exciting opportunities and navigate the potential risks."

The OTE will collaborate with technology teams across various Disney divisions, including Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and Disney Experiences, to foster innovation in alignment with Disney's core values. While the new office will support AI and XR projects across the organization, it is not intended to centralize these initiatives; rather, it aims to enhance coordination and alignment across business units. In addition, Eddie Drake, formerly head of technology at Marvel Studios, has been appointed CTO of Walt Disney Studios, succeeding Voris in that role. Disney's new initiative highlights the company's commitment to leveraging technology to create innovative experiences and adapt to rapid advancements in the industry.
